Fascinating work! Now I want to read the book.

I wonder how these comparisons look when third terms and other national cultures come in, national cultures not wholly derived either from developing societies' pre-industrial expectations (in which the family is the central economic and productive unit) or from Euro-American notions of romance? What's up with single women-- and is there a single women's movement-- in Japan?

Linda Sherman

Excellent article Kay.
Indeed we have found a high interest from India in Singelringen, the Swedish ring for singles which would support your findings of a movement to empower single women.

In response to Steve's question about Japan, where I worked for many years until recently. There is most certainly a single women's movement there, replete with buying their own condo's. But that doesn't mean that Japanese women as a group think or act like American women. As you point out, it is useful to look at social trends from a worldwide view.
