I see my younger brother John in your story of Andrew. John was in and out of the California prison system throughout the 80s and 90s. Today he celebrates 5 1/2 years of clean and sober living, free of probation and parole officers. At 55, he's like so many convicted felons -- unable to find employment. So he has created a workshop where he repairs lawnmowers and sells them. He is content with his life, which is austere at best. I wish him continued "success." However, I ache for Andrew to find fulfillment in his chosen field.

Thanks for sharing your own story of success in your brother John. It so well illustrates how far our criminal justice system has gone wrong with its focus on marginalizing people rather than rehabilitating and reintegrating them into society. Both in your story and in Andrew's what comes through to me is the issue of dignity. Both have done what they needed to do to restore their dignity through the strength of their own character and the help of those willing to give it. But how hard it is to triumph. Here's to success! And my best wishes to John.
